Namun, sebagian besar pria mendeskripsikan tubuh yang ideal adalah berotot, meliputi otot perut yang menonjol jelas, bahu lebar, dan dada besar. Pria cenderung mengarah kepada peningkatan aktivitas fisik untuk membentuk otot dengan latihan angkat beban. Usaha-usaha untuk memperbaiki bentuk tubuh muncul karena pria merasa tidak puas dengan bentuk tubuhnya (<em>body dissatisfaction<\/em>). Kejadian <em>MD <\/em>menjadi masalah terutama pada laki-laki dengan latihan ketahanan. Gejala utama MD adalah olahraga berlebihan, dengan gangguan makan sebagai gejala sekunder. Individu dengan MD percaya bahwa mereka memiliki massa tubuh yang tidak memadai dan melakukan latihan ketahanan beberapa kali setiap minggu, bahkan beberapa kali per hari untuk mencapai bentuk tubuh dan masa otot yang sesuai.<span id=\"ac827944-9ed6-427e-9b30-b7d9bab66346\" data-items=\"[&quot;1905989422&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b3\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"236\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/ahligizi.id\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/muscle-dysmorphia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1007\"\/><figcaption>https:\/\/images.app.goo.gl\/7q4VAzNB3ZbnRRX69<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>M<em>uscle dysmorphia <\/em>dapat diketahui dengan menggunakan beberapa pengukuran, yaitu pengukuran citra tubuh dan pengukuran MD yang dibagi menjadi pengukuran siluet tubuh, pengukuran menggunakan skala likert, wawancara semi-struktur dan pengukuran melalui angket.  Adapun instrumen yang sering digunakan untuk mengetahui MD adalah <em>Muscle Dismorphia Disorder Inventory<\/em> (MDDI), maupun <em>Drive for Muscularity <\/em>(DMS). DMS berisi 15 pernyataan mengenai penilaian terhadap otot tubuh yang diukur dengan rentang nilai 1-4 (1 tidak pernah, 2 kadang-kadang, 3 sering, dan 4 selalu). DMS dipilih karena dapat mengukur secara spesifik variabel \u2013 variabel dari MD serta memiliki konsistensi dan validitas yang tinggi pada subjek (\u03b1-Cronbach\u2019s 0,85-0,91). Semakin tinggi skor DMS maka seseorang semakin dinyatakan memiliki citra tubuh negatif. <em>Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory<\/em> (MDDI) cenderung mengukur variabel terkait (mis., kendala diet dan perlindungan tubuh).<span id=\"a2ba196b-828b-4969-be50-db3186ef6ec0\" data-items=\"[&quot;1307993206&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b4\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kriteria MD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adapun kriteria diagnostik yang digunakan saat ini untuk <em>muscle dysmorphia <\/em>mencakup setidaknya dua hal berikut <span id=\"9322a6df-7e6a-479f-8917-176e0e7a7bf2\" data-items=\"[&quot;1905989422&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" class=\"abt-citation\" data-has-children=\"true\"><sup>\u200b3\u200b<\/sup><\/span> :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li>Melewatkan acara sosial atau kegiatan lain untuk mempertahankan diet dan jadwal latihan<\/li><li>Kecemasan atau penghindaran total dari tempat di mana tubuh terpapar\/terlihat, seperti kolam renang, danau, atau pantai<\/li><li>Gangguan kemampuan di tempat kerja atau acara sosial karena pikiran yang konstan tentang ukuran tubuh yang tidak memadai<\/li><li>Pengurangan asupan lemak, peningkatan asupan protein dan penggunaan obat-obatan yang dapat meningkatkan kinerja serta melakukan diet ekstrem lain<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Salah satu perbedaan utama antara individu dengan anoreksia dan MD adalah penggunaan alat bantu ergogenik untuk mencapai tujuan meningkatkan masa otot. Penelitian telah menunjukkan bahwa hingga 90% pria dengan MD telah menggunakan beberapa bentuk zat ergogenik, termasuk steroid.<sup>6<\/sup> Masalah utama MD berkaitan dengan olahraga berlebihan dengan penekanan sekunder pada makanan. Hal ini berbeda dengan gangguan makan, seperti anoreksia dan bulimia, yang memiliki masalah utama hanya pada perilaku makan.<span id=\"f752b146-97a9-4408-878b-98c89427eed6\" data-items=\"[&quot;1307993206&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" class=\"abt-citation\" data-has-children=\"true\"><sup>\u200b4\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dampak MD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gangguan perilaku makan<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Karakteristik makan yang utama dari seseorang dengan <em>muscle dysmorphia<\/em> adalah diet hiperprotein dan hipolipid dengan konsumsi suplemen makanan untuk meningkatkan massa otot dan mengurangi massa lemak tubuh yang mencerminkan masalah kesehatan masyarakat yang serius.<span id=\"c85901d2-ee9a-47e4-b94d-f1927266612a\" data-items=\"[&quot;639633100&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" class=\"abt-citation\" data-has-children=\"true\"><sup>\u200b5\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praktik pemberian makan yang tidak memadai pada pria MD memengaruhi hasil latihan atlet, begitupun penggunaan suplemen makanan dan penyalahgunaan anabolik steroid yang dikaitkan dengan frekuensi gangguan yang lebih tinggi dan kurangnya makanan yang memadai terkait dengan memburuknya psikopatologi dan gangguan tubuh. Individu yang mengonsumsi anabolik steroid mengalami perubahan pola makan sehingga diet seimbang terdistorsi, karena makanan dan zat gizi mikro digantikan oleh suplemen ergogenik.<span id=\"4b1dcb36-4c3e-4490-8925-b07d3cc4597d\" data-items=\"[&quot;211845056&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b6\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Konsumsi suplemen berlebihan<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Risiko konsumsi suplemen makanan secara sembarangan, atau dalam kombinasi dengan zat lain dapat merangsang sistem saraf pusat meliputi : peningkatan tekanan darah dan detak jantung, kecenderungan aritmia jantung, kejang jantung, dan iskemia miokard pada orang yang rentan. Gejala lain termasuk gangguan tidur, tremor, agitasi, kurangnya koordinasi dan ketergantungan psikologis.
