Organisme ini dapat bersel satu maupun bersel banyak dan berpigmen sehingga dapat berfotosintesis seperti tumbuhan. Rumput laut telah banyak dimanfaatkan untuk kehidupan manusia antara lain makanan manusia, pakan hewan seperti ikan, industri obat dan kosmetik, bahan pupuk, bahan pembuat lem, penanggulangan limbah, dan reklamasi tanah.<span id=\"d18b1753-fd52-4a30-9111-f90e68fbc949\" data-items=\"[&quot;374873212&quot;]\" contenteditable=\"false\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b1\u200b<\/sup><\/span> S<strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">ebagai makanan manusia, rumput laut dapat diolah menjadi beraneka jenis makanan dengan kandungan gizi yang baik. <\/span><\/strong>Jenis-jenis rumput laut yang dapat dikonsumsi oleh manusia adalah sebagai berikut:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Ulva<\/em> sp.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>merupakan <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">alga hijau (<em>Chlorophyta<\/em>) yang biasa dikenal dengan nama selada lau<\/span><\/strong>t. Rumput laut ini telah banyak diolah menjadi berbagai ragam makanan antara lain keripik ulva, salad ulva, pia ulva, dan lain sebagainya. Kombu sering dipakai sebagai bahan dasar untuk kaldu sup, diolah menjadi permen, salad, sebagai pembungkus udon dan lain sebagainya. Alga ini mengandung senyawa bioaktif seperti <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">fukosantin dan laminarin yang memiliki efek bagi kesehatan manusia. Salah satunya yaitu berperan dalam menjaga sistem kardiovaskular.<\/span><\/strong> Selain senyawa bioaktif, <em>Laminaria digitata<\/em> juga mengandung karbohidrat, protein, lemak, air, vitamin serta mineral. Salah senyawa bioaktof tersebut adalah <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">porphyran yang memiliki potensi sebagai antikanker, antiinflamasi, antikoagulan, antiaging, antiviral, dapat meningkatkan respon sistem imun tubuh,<\/span><\/strong> dan berbagai manfaat lainnya. Selain itu, tepung alga ini dapat digunakan sebagai pengganti tepung terigu atau tepung gandum dalam pembuatan berbagai makanan antara lain nugget pisang, nugget ikan, roti tawar, mie dan lain sebagainya.
