Ketersediaan garam sangat penting bagi peradaban melalui penggunaannya sebagai penyedap rasa penambah dan sebagai pengawet dalam produk makanan. Secara historis, garam diproduksi dengan air garam mendidih yang bersumber dari berbagai sumber alam antara lain air laut, sumur, danau, dan mata air asin, dan bisa juga ditemukan di sebagian garam batu di tambang<span id=\"72bc3646-16fd-427f-b514-5d0a273d2a7d\" data-items=\"[&quot;1004920976&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b1\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natrium adalah unsur yang ditemukan dalam garam dan dianggap perlu untuk fisiologis manusia yang berfungsi sebagai pengatur volume cairan ekstraseluler, konduksi saraf, dan fungsi otot fungsi<span id=\"521ec589-ebe1-442b-a323-3b70e29a242d\" data-items=\"[&quot;3169929433&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b2\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. Garam (Sodium klorida) memainkan peran sentral dalam potensi membran untuk sebagian besar sel dan dalam potensial aksi untuk kontraksi otot<span id=\"59be4e11-74e3-48bf-8e93-7ddc87581a8e\" data-items=\"[&quot;2114970364&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b3\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Sayangnya, pola makan dengan asupan garam berlebih menjadi penyebab tekanan darah tinggi yang selanjutnya meningkatkan risiko penyakit kardiovaskular<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garam sekarang tersebar luas dalam makanan kemasan dan kebanyakan orang dewasa dengan mudah melebihi <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">rekomendasi WHO yaitu kurang dari 2 g natrium per hari (setara dengan sekitar 5 g garam per hari)<span id=\"e32eca95-1666-4324-91d9-3c94203bc21d\" data-items=\"[&quot;1340318123&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span id=\"e32eca95-1666-4324-91d9-3c94203bc21d\" data-items=\"[&quot;1340318123&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>4\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. Garam ini ditambang di Tambang Garam Khewra di Khewra, Distrik Jhelum, Punjab, yang terletak di kaki bukit Sistem perbukitan Salt Range di provinsi Punjab di Dataran Indo-Gangga. Terletak di sekitar 190 mil (310 km) dari Himalaya, 160 mil (260 km) dari Lahore, dan 185 mil (298 km) dari Amritsar, India. Garam Himalaya secara konseptual mirip dengan garam meja pada umumnya namum ditambah mineral. Ini <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">terdiri dari 95-98% natrium klorida, 2-4% polialit (kalium, kalsium, magnesium, sulfur, oksigen, hidrogen), 0,01% fluorida, 0,01% yodium dan sejumlah kecil mineral<\/span><\/strong>. Sampel <em>himalayan salt<\/em> yang berwarna merah muda gelap mengandung kadar kalsium yang lebih tinggi (perbedaan rata-rata: 2583,90 mg \/ kg), kalium (2747,40 mg \/ kg), aluminium (98,47 mg \/ kg), barium (0,97 mg \/ kg) dan silikon (179,63 mg \/ kg), dan kadar magnesium yang lebih rendah (\u22125528,70 mg \/ kg) dan boron (-1,57 mg \/ kg), dibandingkan dengan sampel garam biasa. Tren serupa ditemukan ketika sampel garam merah muda gelap dibandingkan dengan sampel garam merah muda terang; sedangkan sampel berwarna garam himalaya yang merah muda sedang kadar kalium yang lebih tinggi (perbedaan rata-rata: 2214,40 mg \/ kg) dan barium (0,82 mg \/ kg), dan kadar magnesium yang lebih rendah (\u22125881,60 mg \/ kg), boron (\u22121,76 mg \/ kg), dan sulfur (-16.688,00 mg \/ kg) dibandingkan dengan sampel garam biasa<span id=\"281694c8-b3cd-42ea-8dfe-e0e253220c15\" data-items=\"[&quot;1459621161&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b7\u200b<\/sup><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\">Alasan variabilitas tinggi dalam kandungan mineral antara sampel garam himalaya masih kurang dipahami dan bisa jadi karena profil tanah dan batuan serta kualitas tempat garam dipanen. Variasi dalam tanah dan Kualitas antar negara terbukti mempengaruhi perbedaan kandungan mineral non gizi garam himalaya<span id=\"1f447cec-5898-400c-adc2-4e880e54fc83\" data-items=\"[&quot;163452518&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b8\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. Dalam penelitian terbaru yang meneliti berbagai jenis garam, termasuk garam Himalaya, konsentrasi yang lebih tinggi dari aluminium, silikon, kalium, titanium, magnesium, dan besi ditemukan di garam Himalaya, dibandingkan dengan garam yang berasal dari Brasil<span id=\"592a0a0b-db36-4c6d-9203-a017d830ca4e\" data-items=\"[&quot;163452518&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b8\u200b<\/sup><\/span>. Salah satunya garam himalaya dari Peru yang mengandung kadar timbal yang tinggi (2.59 mg \/ kg) melebihi batas maksimum tingkat kontaminan logam 2 mg \/ kg untuk garam<span id=\"a7471f9f-b2b9-4fa0-aa37-c4daa9c3f709\" data-items=\"[&quot;2360019622&quot;]\" data-has-children=\"true\" class=\"abt-citation\"><sup>\u200b9\u200b<\/sup><\/span>.
